ICBC Unlisted Driver Protection

There is a change in the requirement for you to have unlisted driver protection at a $50.00 annual cost. The following pamphlet explains it.

Simply put one must list every licensed driver residing at your residence.

The unlisted driver protection covers drivers that use your vehicle 12 or less times in 12 months and do not reside with you.

Who should be listed on your policy?

You should consider listing those who drive your car, particularly members of your household or employees, to ensure you’re protected (from a potential one-time financial consequence) should they cause a crash using your car.

What is Unlisted Driver Protection?

Unlisted Driver Protection can provide peace of mind. It protects you from a potential one-time financial consequence should an occasional driver (not listed on your policy) cause a crash using your car.

What happens if an unlisted driver causes a
crash in my car?

This will depend on the driving experience and crash history of the unlisted driver.

Your claim is covered – the potential one-time financial consequence is separate. We will look at what you would have paid had you listed the at- fault driver on your policy vs what you actually paid (without listing the driver). If there is a difference in premium, the financial consequence is:

  • 15 times that difference for Basic insurance, to a maximum of $5,000.
  • 15 times that difference for Optional insurance, to a maximum of two times the total Optional premium.

What are the exceptions?

Unlisted Driver Protection does not apply to:

  • household members or employees of the owner, lessee or principal driver;
  • people who do not hold a valid driver’s licence;
  • people who drove any of the owner’s or lessee’s vehicles more than 12 days in the 12 months prior to the crash; and
  • people who have had an at-fault crash with any of the owner’s or lessee’s vehicles within five years prior to the crash and on or after September 1,2019.

These (excluded) drivers should be listed to avoid a potential one-time financial consequence if they were to cause a crash using your car.

The information in green is the result of a discussion with an ICBC Broker/Agent:

Note: Read this article carefully and contact your ICBC Insurance Broker if you require information specific to your situation.

 This ICBC bulletin explains the $50.00 unlisted driver coverage. There has been a change, apparently there is no mandatory requirement until after an unlisted driver is involved in a at fault accident with your vehicle.

  Note, if you have a family member that is away at school or work and returns home for a short period, they can be added and removed any time. You can add or remove a driver at any time, without a service charge.
